Blessing of the Animals at Olvera Street
Just a quick note to remind you that the Blessing of the Animals with Cardinal Roger Mahony and the Olvera Street Merchants is just around the corner.
Unfortunately, I won't be attending this year but highly recommend the event and have enjoyed meeting many of you in person over the past few years.
You can see some prior photos or take a look at this slide show.
Before and after the animal procession through Olvera Plaza (just before the animal blessing) you can enjoy entertainment, exhibitors, pony rides and a petting zoo.
Olvera Street was the inspiration for my book, Blessing of the Animals: A Guide to Prayers & Ceremonies Celebrations Pets & Other Creatures
Bring your pets and shade. The Blessing of the Animals will take place at El Pueblo de Los Angeles Historical Monument, 125 Paseo de la Plaza, L.A. Sat., noon-5 p.m. Free. (213) 625-7074.

I'm confused - this is dated April 9, and says the Blessing of the Animals at Olvera St. is "just around the corner" = I thought St. Francis' Day was in October....????
Thanks for your comment Bobbie. Try reading Blessing of the Animals to find out more but in a nutshell blessings take place all year long in many different parts of the globe in association with different belief systems.
The original animal blessings in the Catholic tradition were not associated with St Francis but with St Anthony of the Desert whose feast day is in January.
Olvera Street found that bad weather was a hurdle to the event and so moved it to Sabado de Gloria (day before Easter).
Many events take place around the feast day of St Francis which is also World Animal Day but other traditions such as neo-paganism celebrate nature throughout the year.
There is no reason to only bless animals a couple of days a year...and Tumpek Kandang, the Rancheros de Vistadores and other celebrations invite people to blessings all throughout the year.
Hope that this clears it up a bit for you.
