Today's Blessing of the Animals News

From Pittsburg, Pennsylania comes this news: "A blessing of the animals service will be from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday on the grounds of Crafton United Presbyterian Church, 80 Bradford Ave. Participants may stop at any time during those hours. Pets will receive treats and a certificate. For details, call 412-921-2293. Church membership is not required..."

Over in Blairsville, Georgia there will be a bark in the parkfor the humane society's mountain shelter. These types of events are really fun. Check your local area for similar festivities but during the summer months make sure you have plenty of water and provide some sort of shade.

Anyone live in the Mackinac Island, Michigan area? If so, let me know as I found this blessing of the animal announcement. It used to be that blessing of the animals events only took place a couple of times a year. Do you see how main stream these celebrations have become?

Over in Charlotte, North Carolina BLESSING OF THE ANIMALS: Ceremony 11 a.m. June 24, Humane Society of Catawba County shelter, 3476 Valley Arbors Drive, Hickory, behind Target. Public is welcome; all dogs must be leashed and cats in carriers. Other pets welcome. Details: 828-327-3878.

Blessing of the Animals around the USA

Now that my blogs are back in the land of the living versus lost in cyberspace hell...I thought I would catch up with some of the news and other tidbits that have been crossing my desk and email!

Many shelters use animal blessings as fundraisers. This pet blessing in Central Dakota is scheduled for sometime in September at the Bismark Mandan's no kill shelter.

Many of the churches in the Diocese in Kansas City celebrate pet blessings. It doesn't really matter what religious path you follow--animals help people to cross religious boundaries and barriers to celebrate pets!

White United Methodist Church posted these animal blessing
photos.
I always love looking at the photos and the types of animals that arrive for the event.

The Beacon News is reporting about Yappy Hours this month...

In Birmingham, Alabama there was even a pooch parade and blessing of the animals at the Will Rogers Heritage Festival.
It seems as if everyone is including pets in their festivities these days.

However not everyone is happy about the party animals. I think I shared this article with links from the Gothamist some time back. People tend to incorporate and adapt their rituals to the "fur kids" but not without offending some...which is why I encourage people to honor the beliefs and traditions of others.

The Galveston County Daily News had this little article about pet blessings. Most people equate the services with St Francis, when most celebrations take place. However the practice goes back before his life and death--tracing back to the 4th Century in the Catholic Tradition to the feast day of St Anthony of the Desert.

Finally, the Journal in West Virginia is reporting a pet blessing in the memory of Florence Willett-a big animal lover and member of the Tabler Presbyterian Church. The church will also collect supplies for the Berkeley County Humane Society.

Party over at Pet People

This morning over at the Pet People blog the topic was a pet party and while some of us have been partying with our pets for years there are others that are still amazed--or shocked over it.

In the good ol' days (did I really say that?) we had to use innovation for party favors. Today the marketplace is full of options...so grab a copy of Blessing of the Animals for hints and tips and throw a party for your pet. Be sure to drop back by to tell me about it under comments!

Holy Muttrimony? Animal Expert Tips about Beastly Weddings

Did you hear about the wedding where the bride growled at the wedding guests? If so, you probably dismissed the conversation as a reference to a simple case of the pre-wedding jitters. References to a groom being kept on a short leash might lead you to think that he was the meandering sort but today these references might literally be referring to the trend of muttrimony, or more accurately, pet weddings.

Muttrimony and other pet parties and ceremonies are on the increase according to animal trend watcher and author, Diana L Guerrero. Although anecdotal evidence indicates that animal blessing origins stem back to the 4th century or earlier, Guerrero found that contemporary critter ceremonies really began to gain momentum in the last fifteen years or so.

“Pet participation in many events is exploding in popularity. So it is no surprise to hear more about beastly behavior as animals are included events such as wedding ceremonies.” says Diana L Guerrero.

Guerrero is the author of the recently released, Blessing of the Animals: A Guide to Prayers & Ceremonies Celebrating Pets & Other Creatures (ISBN 1402729677). The fun and witty book reveals facts about the timeless tradition of animal blessings and fascinating information about contemporary critter celebrations such as pet weddings and other parties such as bark mitzvahs, meow mixers, yappy hours, and even directs readers where to find entertaining pet pageants and other events.

According to Guerrero, pet wedding trends reflect changes in family living. Her research found that the American Pet Products Manufacturers Association, a nonprofit pet industry organization, believes that 63 percent of US households now accommodate pets. The estimate contrasts with previous US statistics showing only about 30 percent of American households include children younger than 18 years of age.

“Based on changes in the status of animals in the home, it really is no surprise that animals are being included in traditional celebrations--or that they are being honored with their own. People are adapting their rituals and customs to celebrate their animals.”

The demand for pet wedding services is growing and Guerrero knows of one celebrity wedding planner who says that 30% of all lavish affairs include pets. In response to the rising demand, pet wedding coordinator services are beginning to surface. On the web you can find a few entertaining sites such as Doggie I Dos (Canada) or the sarcastic Marry Your Pet (United Kingdom).

Blessing of the Animals
shares pet wedding tips from Reverend Lynn Turner of Texas, a minister who conducts creature ceremonies. The work also includes where to find unique pet wedding services in California and Hawaii but in case you can’t travel, Guerrero includes a few unique ceremonies within the pages—complete with pet vows.

Guerrero said, “Some human weddings include pets but there are pet nuptials conducted just for animals. Most are held as fund raisers or simply for fun. For those who might worry about pet marriages—the activity isn’t a legally binding or recognized ceremony—only a fun event.”

Even the American Kennel Club is interested in the new trends. The kennel club found that at least 18 percent of dog owners surveyed either included, or will include, a dog in a wedding ceremony.

When asked for insider information, Guerrero said, “The fur can really fly when you discuss pet nuptials. People have asked me if they need a prenuptial but my advice is to simply get a ‘pre-nip-tual,’ to take the bite out of things, so to speak."
Blessing of the Animals: A Guide to Prayers & Ceremonies Celebrating Pets & Other Creatures (ISBN 1402729677) is available throughout the United States, Canada, Australia, and the United Kingdom. Free excerpts (and a video with pet wedding photos) are available online at www.blessingoftheanimals.com.

Avoid a beastly wedding with ten animal expert tips:
1. Make sure you alert wedding party attendants and guests that animals will be in the wedding party--and
make sure your event location is pet tolerant.
2. Hire a pet trainer for wedding event training about eight weeks before the wedding and assign an attendant to each animal wedding participant.
3. Outdoor ceremonies should plan to keep animals in the shade and off hot surfaces.
4. Habituate animals to the wedding surroundings and unusual attire (human veils and any pet outfits) before the event.
5. Identify possible hazards to animals and avoid using plants toxic to pets.
6. Make reservations at pet friendly accommodations.
7. Exercise and toilet your animal before the wedding ceremony.
8. Have an alternate plan for the processional and recessional in case pets tire or refuse to cooperate.
9. Make sure the photographer is at ease with animals and includes the critters in the wedding photos.
10. Assign a handler to pets at the ceremony and reception--and don’t forget healthy snacks for pets.

Dog Gone Fun!

There are some really fun activities happening around the USA. During my news watch I found the RevGalDogPal and a link to the Dog Days of Denton Festival which just passed. Make sure you check back to enter the contest for the new doggie idol next year!

Over in OshKosh, Wisconsin they are having some super yappy hour socials! These events are important to create good canine citizenship. Over in my neck of the woods we call them the Puppy Club...if you are ever near Big Bear Lake, California drop me a line and drop by.

Over in La Grange, Illinois they have celebrated an annual pet parade for 61 years! Good jog and is that perhaps the oldest one around these parts?

And while you are surfing around check out Preston in fine form in the Redwood City pet parade over on prestonthepuggle blog.

Pet Trusts & Pet Burials Hitting the News Frequently

Not too long ago people would rarely see or hear about another's pet loss experience. Today that has changed and the topics of pet loss, pet burial, and pet trusts are hitting the newswire with increasing frequency.

Today I read about the RSPCA's new program called Home for Life. Check out the website and the video.

Believe it or not the program is free! New research from the RSPCA suggests that around 70,000 pet owners die each year without making arrangements for their pets in their Will and you can read more hereor in a similar regional article here.

Blessing of the Animals: A Guide to Prayers and Ceremonies Celebrating Pets & Other Animals (ISBN 1402729677) talks about the trend and some of the notable programs already in existence.

Pet burial trends are also on the rise. There are some burial grounds in trouble such as this story that appeared in the Des Moines Register but these seem to be a minority.

Believe it or not there is a professional group for pet cemetery operators called the International Association for Pet Cemeteries.

If you are among the 63% of homes with pets this news would be a topic of interest to you. Don't miss the resources at http://www.blessingoftheanimals.comand be sure to add your discoveries.

Book Expo America Welcomes Blessing of the Animals

Okay, I am just back from New York—attempting to recover. I felt like a country bumpkin gone to the big city! I have lots to share but the first task is to recover from the journey home and non-stop activity...boy am I tired.

Highlights? Well, I got to meet my myspace.com friend Mignon Fogarty—whose podcast landed her a deal. I didn't realize she was at BEA and was excited to actually connect in person.

Mignon also goes by GG so don't get us confused! *snicker* GG was friendly and I loved her session filled with great tips and little known information about grammar. Imagine! Drop by and check her out.

I also got to meet Lindsay (director of A Place for Books) and learned a bit more about myspace.com and other communities. I am done with the book tour and will be embarking on a virtual tour in the next week or so now that my schedule is opening up. Still on the early learning curve.

After a panel with a bunch of radio producers, I saved the day during the panel with the producers of several large television shows such as GMA (Good Morning America), the Early Show, and the Today Show. Which made one producer ask me for the name of my new book, which I shamelessly yelled out. Anyway, I was unofficially dubbed "the techi" and at least might be remembered for that when pitching for segments!

One of the other great things about going to New York (there are many) is that I finally met my agent Sheree Bykofsky in person. She is a great advocate for me and a writer, too. Wouldn't you know it, Dan from the RA has been attempting to lure her to Big Bear for a visit. Small world.

One of the big highlights of the trip was to meet my favorite author, Mary Alice Monroe. I am not one to get really excited over celebrities or notable people but I was _so_ excited to meet her finally. She is keynote speaker at a conference this fall so I might try and arrange my visit with my family around the same time and tie the two trips together.

Mary Alice Monroe combines conservation messages within her books and I was delighted to discover her a few years ago. Her most recent book, Swimming Lessonsis a sequel to the first book I read of hers The Beach Houseand takes me back to my very early days working as a naturalist for the Cabrillo Beach Marine Museum (now aquarium).

Be sure to check out her website and links for information on how to help birds of prey, sea turtles, and to get the latest information on what she is doing. The great news is that she will release a children's book on sea turtles this fall and it is GORGEOUS.

I have to say that I also caught my first
Broadway Play—Spring Awakening.
It was so fantastic that is left me breathless. The audience laughed and embraced the cast—you can catch a glimpse via video on their website (or below but it does not compare to the live version) and look for them to perform at the Tony Awards 2007 next week.

Here is a snap of me with cast member Lea Michele from Spring Awakening(Mecla)

Hope to chat again soon with some hints and tips for bargains in Manhattan...in the meantime I am trying to recover!
